RECREATION COMMISSION PROGRAMS

The Recreation Department is under the direction of Councilman Lawrence. J. Lonergan and is a non-profit service agency for PASD citizens.

For more information regarding these programs, call City Hall at 622-1234 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

2001 Summer Playground Information
  • Program Length
    6 weeks, Monday through Friday - 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    June 18 to July 27, 2001.
  • Ages of Children
    Supervised activities are provided for children ages 6 to 13.
    Younger children must attend with a parent or mature caretaker.
  • Activities
    Games, arts & crafts, walking trips, and other activities.
  • Lunch Program
    Lunch will be provided free to children 18 years and younger.
    This program is federally funded and monitored - children must eat on site.
  • Supervisors
    Two instructors (age 16 and older) will be provided per site.
    This program is not intended as a caretaking service. The instructors are on site to provide activities and fun for the children.
    Children are free to attend and leave at any time.
  • Discipline
    A child may be asked to leave for inappropriate behavior. Rules established by the leaders will be adhered to in a fair and consistent manner.

**Lunches are served at the following locations: Eastside (Joulwan Park), Bunker Hill, Rotary (Yorkville), Race Street, Mt. Hope, Jalappa, Greenwood Hill, Forest Hills, Fairmound Avenue, Arch Street, Peacock Street Projects, Second Street Projects, John O'Hara Housing Projects.
**Restroom and water facilities are not provides at sites.
**The playground and lunch program is free, non-profit, and nondiscriminatory. It is intended to provide fun activities for Pottsville Area School District children.
**Rain cancellations announced on local radio stations.

 

Aqua Aerobics

  • At the Pottsville Middle School Pool
  • Mondays & Wednesdays from June 20 to August 22, 2001
    7:30 - 8:30 p.m. (Low Impact)
    8:30 - 9:30 p.m. (Regular Aerobics)
  • Register at class. Begin any session. Entry at rear of Martz Hall.

Cross Country Camp at Veterans Memorial Stadium
  • Girls and Boys ages 12 to 18.
  • August 6 to 10, 2001
    9:00 a.m. to 11:00 am.
  • Register opening day at the track.
  • No special equipment required.
    Running and Training Techniques.
  • Instructor Joe Muldowney - 622-3036.

Pottsville City Cycle 17
  • Saturday, August 11, 2001 (rain or shine)
  • All ages & abilities.
  • Children's Fun Race - 9:00 a.m.
    • Age Groups
      6 and under, 7 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14
    • Register 8:30 a.m. at 12th and Laurel Boulevard
    • Course begins at 12th and Laurel.
      Course ends at 16th Street.
      Approximately 3/4 mile.
    • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Boy and Girl Prizes in each age group.
    • Awards and refreshments follow last race.
    • Helmets Required - Written parental consent required.

Kid's Helment/Bike Safety Check compliments of City of Pottsville Police Bike Patrol and North Central Highway Safety Network.

  • Adult Race - 10:00 a.m.
    • Registration 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Pottsville High School (Martz Hall).
    • Entry Fee - $15 -- T-shirt for the first 50
    • Course - approximately 17 miles.
    • Prize Awards - Overall Winners
      1st - $75, 2nd - $50, 3rd - $40, 4th - $30,
      5th - $20, 6th - $10
    • 1st Each Age Group - $10 each
      19 & under, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34,
      35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 plus.
    • 1st Female - $25
      2nd Female - $10
    • Free refreshments and awards following race.
    • Helmets Required - Gloves Recommended.

Swimming at JFK Aquatic Facility
  • Opening Day - June 2, 2001.

Delight in the excitement of aquatic recreation. Ride the Modern Tube Slide. Learn to swim programs. Enjoy summer at the facility. Watch Newspaper and local media for additional information.


Tennis Camp at JFK Courts

    July 6, 2001 at 8:00 a.m. at JFK Courts
  • Girls and Boys ages 6 to 18.
  • July 6 to August 1, 2001
  • Ages 6 to 11 - 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 am.
  • Ages 12 to 18 - 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Includes lessons and use of racquet.
  • Lessons held Wednesday and Friday.

CANCELLATION POLICY -- When the I.U. at MarLin or Pottsville Area School District closes school or has early dismissal, recreational programs are automatically cancelled for that evening.
